Phone or tablet as your chartplotter — when it works, when it does not

The question quietly killing the entry-level chartplotter market is whether the iPad already sitting on your boat is good enough. For an increasing number of boats — particularly under 40 feet, particularly used in protected water, particularly owned by boaters who already think in terms of apps — the honest answer is yes. A modern tablet running a serious navigation app is genuinely capable: GPS accurate to 3–5 meters, sun-readable in the right cradle, AIS-overlay-ready if you have a Wi-Fi-enabled receiver, and able to read weather and route information from cellular or Starlink when you have a connection.

Where it falls apart is environmental. A phone in direct Florida sun overheats and throttles within fifteen minutes — the screen dims, the GPS fix drops to once every few seconds, and the app starts to feel laggy at the exact moment you need it most. A tablet in a marine-grade waterproof case mitigates some of this, but you trade one problem for two — battery life under heavy GPS use is 4–6 hours, and the unsealed charging port becomes the failure point during a hard rain or a green-water wave over the bow.

The fixed-mount argument for offshore

For boats over 50 feet, for offshore passages where being 200 miles from a backup is plausible, and for charter operations that need predictable hardware, a fixed-mount plotter as the primary system remains the defensible answer. The reason is not the chart quality — apps are now equivalent or better in many waters — it is the brutal reliability of marine-rated hardware soldered to a 12V bus that has none of the failure modes of consumer tablets. An app is the supplement; the plotter is the primary.

Offline charts — what each app actually caches

The single most important question for any marine navigation app is what happens when the cellular signal drops. You're three miles offshore, the LTE bars went to zero ten minutes ago, your phone is connected to nothing — does the chart still load? Does it still load at every zoom level? Does it still load tomorrow when the cached tiles expire? The answer differs by app, and the marketing on every vendor's website is uniformly misleading about it.

Aqua Map and OpenCPN: download once, keep forever

Aqua Map and OpenCPN use the same fundamental approach: download NOAA chart packs once, store them on the device permanently, and use them offline forever. There is no expiration, no re-download requirement, and no subscription gate. Navionics' model is subscription-based — you pay $25–$80 per year depending on coverage area, and that subscription buys you continuous chart updates and offline tile downloads. If you let the subscription lapse, you still have the app, but the offline tiles expire after roughly twelve months and the daily SonarChart updates stop. The offline test you should run before every passage

At the dock, with your phone connected to Wi-Fi, open your chart app and pan to the area you plan to navigate. Zoom in to detail level. Then enable airplane mode. Pan, zoom, and verify the chart still loads at every zoom level. If a tile is missing or shows "loading," the offline cache is incomplete and you will discover this at the worst possible moment. Never trust an offline chart you haven't airplane-mode-tested first.

The Garmin ActiveCaptain app (app link) is the right answer for boaters who already own a Garmin chartplotter — it pairs over Wi-Fi to push waypoints, routes, and software updates between the phone and the plotter, and includes crowdsourced marina reviews and points of interest. It is not a standalone chartplotter app in the sense that Aqua Map or Navionics are; it is a companion app to a hardware chartplotter. If your helm is Garmin, install it. If it isn't, skip it.

The TimeZero iBoat app (app link) and savvy navvy (app link) are both worth looking at for specific use cases. TimeZero iBoat uses C-MAP cartography with a different visual style and is popular with French and Mediterranean cruisers. savvy navvy is the routing-first app for sailors — it treats wind, tide, and current as first-class inputs to a route recommendation, with cleaner weather routing than any other mass-market app. Neither beat the Navionics worldwide coverage or Aqua Map's U.S. value, but if routing-first design matters more than chart detail, savvy navvy in particular is interesting.

US vs worldwide chart coverage

The single decision that determines which app you should pay for is where you boat. The U.S. is a special case in the marine cartography world because NOAA publishes charts as a public good, free for any developer to incorporate. Outside the U.S., charts are generally proprietary — produced by national hydrographic offices or commercial vendors (C-MAP, Navionics, Garmin BlueChart) and licensed for fees that make free apps difficult.

In U.S. waters

Aqua Map and OpenCPN both use NOAA charts directly. The cartography is exactly the same as what a commercial chartplotter uses for U.S. waters — it is the official government chart, updated weekly, fully detailed. Navionics builds its own cartography from NOAA data plus proprietary survey adjustments, which is a marginal improvement in some specific regions but not enough to justify a subscription on its own. For U.S.-only boaters, free NOAA via Aqua Map is the better-value answer.

The one place Navionics' U.S. coverage clearly wins is the SonarChart layer, which incorporates crowdsourced depth data from connected transducers and updates daily. In the Bahamas, the Florida Keys, and parts of the Chesapeake, SonarChart shows shoaling and channel detail that NOAA simply does not have. Outside the U.S.

Outside the U.S., the calculation flips. National hydrographic charts in Canada, Europe, the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia are not free, and Aqua Map's per-region packs ($30 each) get expensive if you are crossing multiple oceans. Navionics' worldwide plan ($80/year) is the simpler answer for any cruiser planning to leave the U.S. for more than a single chart pack's worth of destination. OpenCPN with manually sourced charts is the third option for international cruisers — it's the work-intensive answer, but for the kind of boater who has built an OpenPlotter Pi at the nav station, manually sourcing free or low-cost charts in each region is the same workflow they already use for the fixed system. Bermudian and Australian government chart agencies, for example, publish free ENC charts that OpenCPN reads natively.

AIS overlay support — receiving your AIS data on your phone

One of the most useful features in any modern navigation app is AIS overlay — your AIS receiver or transceiver feeds data into the app over Wi-Fi, and you see other vessels' positions, names, courses, and CPA (closest point of approach) directly on the chart on your phone. All three top picks support this; the implementation differs in detail.

What you need

An onboard AIS unit that can broadcast NMEA 0183 sentences over Wi-Fi. Most modern transceivers and receivers do this — the Vesper Cortex M1, the Quark-elec QK-A027, and most Em-Trak units, for example. How the apps connect

All three apps connect to AIS data the same way: you join your phone or tablet to the Wi-Fi network the AIS unit creates (or, better, configure the AIS unit to join your boat's existing Wi-Fi), then in the app you enter the TCP or UDP host and port where NMEA 0183 sentences are being broadcast. Aqua Map and Navionics have menu-driven setup wizards for this; OpenCPN exposes the raw NMEA 0183 connection settings.

The cleanest setup is to have the AIS unit join your boat's existing Wi-Fi (your Starlink router or your cellular router) rather than creating its own SSID. That way your phone stays on one network and gets AIS data alongside cellular internet. Internet AIS is not the same thing

MarineTraffic and similar apps show AIS targets uploaded from shore-based receivers — they show commercial ships well but miss most recreational vessels and they do not work offshore where there's no cellular. They are useful for situational awareness at the dock; they are not a substitute for an onboard AIS receiver feeding your navigation app.

Anchor watch, weather, and routing

Beyond charts and AIS, three features separate a serious navigation app from a chart viewer: anchor watch, weather overlay, and dock-to-dock routing.

Anchor watch

An anchor watch sets a circle around your anchor position and alarms loudly if your boat drifts outside it overnight. Aqua Map and Navionics both have native anchor watch features that work even when the app is backgrounded — useful, because you want to be able to use the phone for other things without losing the alarm. OpenCPN's anchor watch is a plugin, which works fine on a laptop but is awkward on the Android port. For a dedicated alarm on a phone left running in the cabin, Aqua Map's anchor watch is the simplest and most reliable.

The key gotcha: phone-based anchor watches are only as reliable as your phone's battery and the iOS or Android background-execution rules. Weather overlay

Navionics has the most polished weather overlay — wind, waves, and precipitation rendered directly on the chart, refreshed from cellular when you have a connection. Aqua Map's weather is improving but uses a separate panel rather than chart overlay. OpenCPN's weather is GRIB-based — you download a GRIB file (compressed weather forecast) via the WeatherFax or GRIB plugin and overlay it on the chart, which is the technically correct way to do it for offshore use where you might pull GRIBs over SSB or satellite, but it's more work than the simpler app-fetched weather of Navionics.
