- Coverage drops off a cliff past ~15 miles from shore. LTE/5G towers are engineered for land use. A boat 20 miles offshore has a weak signal at best, no signal typically.

Layer 2 — Starlink: the coverage game-changer
Starlink is what made this article necessary. Before 2022, "broadband internet at sea" meant a $50,000 VSAT terminal and $3,000/month service — realistic only for superyachts.
