Cellular, Starlink, and Iridium each solve different connectivity problems for boats. Confusing them — or assuming one replaces another — is how people end up with either a $3,000/year bill or no signal when it matters. Here's how they fit together, what each actually costs, and how to decide which layers you need.

The three-layer mental model

Most boat connectivity confusion comes from trying to compare products that aren't competing. Starlink didn't replace cellular any more than cellular replaced marine VHF. They solve different problems. The right question isn't "which one do I get" — it's "which layers does my boating need."

Here's the framing that actually helps:

The mistake is thinking you pick one. The reality is that most serious cruisers end up with two layers (cellular + Starlink), offshore cruisers end up with all three (cellular + Starlink + Iridium), and casual dock-kept boats need only layer one.

Starlink is what made this article necessary. Before 2022, "broadband internet at sea" meant a $50,000 VSAT terminal and $3,000/month service — realistic only for superyachts. Starlink dropped that to $249 hardware and $50/month. Within three years, it went from "the new option" to "the obvious option" for any boat that ventures beyond cellular range.

What Starlink doesn't replace

Layer 3 — Iridium: the offshore safety layer

Iridium is the old guard of satellite communications. Launched in 1998, the Iridium constellation has 66 satellites in polar low-earth orbit — giving it true global coverage including the poles, which Starlink doesn't match. The trade-off: tiny bandwidth. Iridium speeds are measured in kilobits per second, not megabits.

For boaters, Iridium matters for three specific things:

Combining layers: the hybrid router question

The "phone hotspot + Starlink" approach

What this math leaves out

Does Starlink replace cellular for boats?

No. Starlink and cellular solve different problems. Cellular is faster, cheaper, and lower-latency within 10-15 miles of shore. Starlink is the only option once you are beyond cellular range. Most cruisers run both: cellular as the everyday layer, Starlink as the anywhere-broadband layer.

How far offshore does cellular work on a boat?

Cellular LTE and 5G are engineered for land coverage. Useful signal typically reaches 10-15 miles offshore in well-covered US coastal regions. Beyond about 20 miles, expect weak signal at best and frequently no signal. Do I still need Iridium if I have Starlink?
