Starlink Maritime and Starlink Mini have rewritten the economics of boat communications. And yet — a handheld satellite communicator is still the device that gets people home alive. Here's the honest math.

Starlink is a data service, not a safety system

Starlink Mini draws 20 to 40 watts, Starlink Standard 50 to 75 watts. The dish needs clear sky and a powered, network-connected modem. The battery in a small powerbank gets you maybe two hours. If the boat is flooding, the dish is underwater, the inverter has shut down, or you're in a liferaft, Starlink is not coming back online. Iridium — the global mesh

Iridium operates 66 low-earth-orbit satellites arranged in a mesh that covers the entire planet, including the poles. Because satellites are in LEO (about 480 miles up), latency is low — typically under a second for short messages, a few seconds for voice. Because the constellation is a true mesh, your signal can reach any point on the planet by hopping between satellites until it finds a ground station. Iridium is the only network that genuinely covers the polar regions and the deep ocean.

Globalstar — cheaper, gappier

Globalstar uses 48 LEO satellites in a constellation that does not cover the poles, has gaps over central Africa and parts of the southern oceans, and works on a "bent-pipe" architecture — your signal must reach a satellite that simultaneously sees a ground station, which means coverage holes are larger than they look on the map.
