For thirty years a "chartplotter" did one thing: it plotted your position on a chart. A modern multifunction display still does that, but it is no longer the primary description of what the box is. The MFD is the helm computer through which every other electronic sensor on the boat talks to you. It is your radar head, your sonar processor, your AIS overlay, your autopilot controller, your engine gauge cluster, your fuel and tank monitor, your camera display, and — increasingly — your Wi-Fi access point and bridge to Signal K servers running elsewhere on the boat.
That convergence is what makes choosing an MFD harder than choosing a chartplotter ever was. You are not buying a screen; you are buying an ecosystem. The brand you pick will determine which radar, which sonar transducer, which autopilot computer, which thermal camera, and which sailing-instrument pack you can install — because the proprietary protocols (Garmin's Marine Network, Raymarine's SeaTalk-NG, Navico's Ethernet over RJ45) do not cross brands.
The standardized layer that does cross brands is NMEA 2000. Every modern MFD speaks N2K natively, and that is where AIS targets, GPS position, wind data, depth, engine data, fuel level, and rudder angle all live. What lives on the MFD versus elsewhere
Practical mental model: the MFD is the display and the user interface. Behind it sit the actual sensors — the radar dome on the arch, the transducer through the hull, the AIS transceiver in the lazarette, the autopilot computer in the engine room. The MFD reads them, draws the picture, and lets you push the buttons. Useful corollary: if your MFD dies on passage, the underlying sensors are still working — they just have nowhere to be displayed. A spare phone or tablet running OpenCPN, paired with a Signal K bridge, will keep you navigating until you get to a marina with a replacement.
Garmin Marine Network vs Raymarine LightHouse vs Navico (Simrad/B&G) — ecosystem lock-in
The single biggest decision in this category is brand. Not "Garmin or Raymarine" as a screen-quality question — they are all good screens — but as a question of which sensor ecosystem you are locking into for the next decade.
Garmin Marine Network
Garmin is the largest player and runs the broadest ecosystem. GPSMAP and the newer xsv series sit at the top, GPSMAP 12-inch units anchor the cruising-boat market, and the ECHOMAP line covers smaller boats. The proprietary Garmin Marine Network is Ethernet-based and connects Fantom radar (the consumer-facing solid-state radar line), GHC autopilot heads, Panoptix Livescope sonar, and FLIR cameras through a Garmin gateway. Garmin's BlueChart g3 Vision is excellent in North America and Europe and has the deepest auto-routing data of any chartmaker. The downside: Garmin's UI is dense and feature-stacked in a way that takes time to learn — there are six menu layers where Raymarine has three.
Raymarine LightHouse 4
Raymarine's LightHouse OS is the UI everyone copies and nobody quite catches. Multitouch behaves the way iOS taught your hands to expect — pinch, swipe, drag — and the menu structure is shallow and intelligible. SeaTalk-NG is Raymarine's proprietary backbone, which is functionally a Raymarine flavor of NMEA 2000 with extra capabilities — it carries Raymarine-specific autopilot, instrument, and switching data that standard N2K cannot. Quantum 2 radar (also solid-state) is the radar equivalent of the Fantom — short-range Doppler, target acquisition, and the same approximate price band. ClearCruise object recognition is a Raymarine-only feature that uses computer vision against the FLIR camera feed to highlight other vessels, debris, and navigation marks in low light.
Navico — Simrad and B&G
Navico owns both Simrad (powerboat) and B&G (sailboat) and they run on the same underlying NOS operating system. From a sensor perspective they are interchangeable — the same Halo radar, the same StructureScan sonar, the same NAC autopilot computers. The difference is the UI skin and the sailing-specific software pack. B&G adds SailSteer, LaylineSync, race start-line algorithms, and polar performance overlays. Simrad adds powerboat-oriented features — fuel range overlays, joystick docking integration with Mercury and Yamaha engines, and a more conventional dashboard. If you sail, B&G. If you power, Simrad. The hardware is identical underneath.
Across all three: you can mix brands at the NMEA 2000 layer. GPS, AIS, engine data, wind, depth, fuel — these all share a standard and work across brands. You cannot mix at the proprietary layer — a Garmin Fantom radar does not talk to a Raymarine MFD, and a Raymarine Quantum 2 radar does not talk to a B&G. Pick the MFD first; it determines almost every other connected sensor on the boat.
One useful exception: AIS travels over NMEA 2000 cleanly. The Furuno TZT3-12 (check price) is the commercial-pedigree option. Furuno radar is what trawler operators and offshore fishermen run because the receiver design is genuinely better — long-range detection in heavy weather is meaningfully more reliable than Doppler-based recreational radars. The catch is price (typically $3,800+ for the 12-inch unit) and a UI that feels designed for someone who already knew how to use Furuno before they bought it. Display size and what fits a small-boat helm
MFD sizes span 7 inches to 24 inches and the right answer is almost entirely a function of how far your eyes are from the screen when you are at the wheel. There is a real practical mapping.
7 to 9 inches — the inboard helm or center console
A 7- or 9-inch unit is right when your helm is small, your dash is shallow, and you read the screen at arm's length (24 to 30 inches). The Garmin ECHOMAP UHD2 9, Raymarine Axiom 9, and Simrad GO9 XSE all fit pod mounts, dash cutouts under 10 inches wide, and read well for one user. The catch: split-screen layouts get cramped fast. 12 inches — the sweet spot for most cruisers
A 12-inch MFD is the size most cruisers settle on. Big enough to run a four-pane split (chart, radar, sonar, engine data) without each pane becoming useless. Small enough to fit a typical 14-inch dash cutout with a flush-mount bezel kit (the flush mount kit is around $80 to $120 depending on brand). 16 inches and up — hardtop and flybridge helms
16-, 19-, and 22-inch MFDs are for installations where the screen is mounted at a hardtop helm, a flybridge, or behind a wheel that puts you 4 to 6 feet back from the screen. At that distance, a 12-inch screen looks like a phone. A 16-inch glass cockpit unit — like the Axiom XL — is where you want to be. A 16-inch MFD on a small dash looks impressive on Instagram but reads worse than a 12-inch unit at 24 inches viewing distance — your eyes have to scan rather than glance. The right size is the one where you can take in the whole screen in one glance from where you stand at the wheel.
Charts — BlueChart g3, LightHouse Charts, C-MAP, what costs what
Almost every MFD ships with basic chart data and assumes you will buy the premium chartset for the regions you actually cruise. Budget for charts as a separate line item — the unit price does not include the navigation data you want.
Garmin BlueChart g3 Vision
The deepest chartset in North America and Europe for auto-routing. BlueChart g3 ("standard") is around $150 to $200 per region. BlueChart g3 Vision adds 3D BlueChart and Auto Guidance — Garmin's auto-routing engine that calculates a route around shoal water and through marked channels automatically — for approximately $250 to $350 per region. Regions are typically large (US East Coast, US Gulf, Bahamas as one product) but you can spend $600 to $800 if you cruise across multiple regions.
Raymarine LightHouse Charts
Raymarine includes LightHouse Charts free for many regions — this is a genuine differentiator and a real $200 to $400 savings versus Garmin or Navico. Premium regions add cost (approximately $99 to $199), and you can also run Navionics or C-MAP on Raymarine MFDs alongside LightHouse, which gives you fallback chart data if you do not trust the included set.
C-MAP MAX-N+ and Discover (Navico / Simrad / B&G)
C-MAP is the chartset that ships natively on Simrad and B&G units. C-MAP Discover is the entry tier (around $99 to $149 per region); MAX-N+ adds 3D and tide / current data for $150 to $200 per region. C-MAP coverage is particularly strong in the Caribbean and Mediterranean — better than BlueChart in many island chains. You can also run Navionics on Simrad and B&G if you prefer that interface.
The honest reality: most cruisers run two chartsets in parallel. Your MFD's native set as the primary, plus a phone or tablet running Navionics Boating or Aqua Map as a sanity check. The chartsets disagree often enough — usually on water depth in shallow channels — that having two sources is a meaningful safety upgrade. None of the MFD brands restrict you from this; it just costs more.
Install: power, NMEA 2000 backbone, GPS, Wi-Fi
Installing an MFD properly is more work than swapping a chartplotter for one reason: the MFD is the center of a network, and that network has to be sized correctly. Three things matter.
Power
A 12-inch MFD draws roughly 25 to 40W depending on brightness — about 2 to 3 amps at 12V continuous. The dash run wants 14 AWG wire (10 AWG if the run from the bus exceeds 15 feet) and a dedicated 5A circuit breaker on its own bus position. Do not share the MFD circuit with the VHF radio, the autopilot, or the radar — each of those has its own current spike profile and you want isolation faults on each one. NMEA 2000 backbone
If you do not already have an N2K backbone, install one before the MFD. A backbone is two terminator resistors (one at each end), a main trunk cable (T-connectors only — never daisy-chain), and drop cables from the trunk to each device. A 12V 5A power feed plugs into the backbone at one of the T-connectors. The MFD itself is a drop off the backbone via a single N2K drop cable. The single most common install mistake we see: forgetting one of the terminators, which causes intermittent data dropouts the installer chases for hours.
GPS antenna
Most MFDs have an internal GPS receiver, but the antenna in the unit is behind glass and dash plastics, which kills accuracy. Run an external GPS puck mounted on the radar arch or a rail clamp with clean sky view, and wire it to the N2K backbone (most Garmin, Raymarine, and Simrad GPS pucks are N2K-native and add into the bus as drops). The MFD reads the external GPS preferentially over its internal one. Position fix improvement is dramatic — you go from 5- to 10-meter accuracy on the internal antenna to 1- to 3-meter on an external puck.
Wi-Fi and Signal K bridge
Every modern MFD has built-in Wi-Fi for app integration and software updates. You can run the MFD as the Wi-Fi access point or — cleaner — join it to your boat's existing Wi-Fi network (provided by your marine cellular router or Starlink).
